Schulz Electric Relocates, Expands Service Center in East Haven, Conn., Increasing Capacity, Repair Capabilities

Large electric motor and generator repair, storage, and maintenance available to customers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Region

NORTH CANTON, Ohio: TBD, 2021 — Schulz Electric, part of Timken Power Systems’ network of repair facilities, has moved to a new 41,000-square foot electric motor and generator repair facility located at 110 Commerce Street in East Haven, Conn. Schulz Electric can now offer broader powertrain solutions to both new and existing customers from the new location.

“The opening of our East Haven facility extends our regional service center network capabilities in key markets,” said Carl Rapp, vice president of the Timken Power Systems group. “This move allows us to expand capabilities for our existing Power Generation, Water Management, Paper, and Municipal customers. Also, we will complement the mechanical aftermarket services that we provide by working with Philadelphia Gear to expand our Marine market services.”

The multi-million-dollar investment provides more space in a more efficient, linear layout that allows for leaner manufacturing processes. The usable shop floor space under heavy cranes has increased, and features isolated equipment teardown and machining areas to avoid cross-contamination of final equipment repair processes. Additionally, the shop is outfitted with two high bay manufacturing spaces with increased ceiling height to accommodate larger motor and generator repairs and maximize usable vertical storage space. The newly renovated office space was built to suit and includes a new customer training area—once in-person programs are reinstated.

“This move will benefit our customers through improved workflow, streamlined processes, and larger capacity equipment,” said Mike DiGiacomo, plant manager of the East Haven service center. “I am proud of the work we have put into this building to ensure it is a world-class motor repair facility, and we are ready to grow with our customers,” added DiGiacomo. “With our experienced technical staff and the ability to handle larger motors, we can expand our service offerings to a broader range of customers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.”

The new site’s efficient layout optimizes the available space. The shop features increased crane capacity, more efficient burnout ovens, ergonomic lift tables, and room to accommodate larger diameter VPI (vacuum pressure impregnation) tanks to deploy our new resin formula.

Another critical part of the renovation included building a new test area with a true level testbed that allows for more accurate baseline spin and load test readings. The manufacturing floor was also outfitted with a larger, better-designed storage area dedicated to maintaining our customer’s critical electric motor and generator spares.

In addition to providing electrical services supporting power generation, manufacturing, municipalities, and the U.S. Government, Schulz is also a preeminent supplier to the U.S. Commercial Nuclear industry. Our licenses have been transferred to the new facility, and to better serve nuclear customers, final renovations included an improved cell to support safety-related motor repairs exclusively.
